Welcome

We are very excited to be hosting the 27th edition of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games in November 2022.

We are committed in hosting a memorable Games that benefits the status of the best university in Ghana and also to showcase the talented student athletes that are been nurtured in all the fourteen (14) participating universities.

It is our goal to continue to imbibe in our student athletes and all stakeholders the morals, values and ethics of sports. The theme for the Games β€œHarnessing sporting talents of students for national development through healthy competition using science and technology” was carefully chosen to drum home the far reaching possibility that Sports and Education are one of the powerful tools for empowering the youth and causing positive social change.

The LOC made up of industry players across diverse fields of study is working tirelessly to ensure you have a wonderful experience on the campus of KNUST.

Message from the Vice-Chancellor

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is extremely proud to host the 27th edition of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games in November 2022 after successfully hosting the 22nd edition of the games in 2012.

The games coincide with our 70th Anniversary Celebration as the premier Science and Technology University in Ghana. We, therefore, share our joy with participating universities and extend to them a golden opportunity to be part of our anniversary as well as experience our unique cultural heritage and the beautiful campus through sports.

Brief History

From 1964, the three existing public universities in Ghana began having biennial games without any central organising body. The idea of the formation of Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) occurred in 1965 when the three universities of Ghana attended the maiden West Africa University Games (WAUG) held in March 1965 at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The Ghanaian universities realised that there was in a existence a Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) which organised competitions for Nigerian universities.

Upon their return, ET Kodzi, then coach of the University of Cape Coast, was tasked to draft a constitution for GUSA, which was adopted in 1969. The first leaders were: President: Sam Blankson (University of Cape Coast) and Secretary: ET Kodzi (University of Cape Coast)

Several others played leadership roles in the growth of GUSA including JE Mills of the University of Ghana (former President of Ghana) who was president for 15 years.

With the initial membership of three public universities, GUSA now has seven members. The other members are University of Education, Winneba (first as Specialist Training College), University of Development Studies, University of Mines and Technology, and University of Professional Studies, Accra. In 2013, the constitution of GUSA was reviewed and private universities are now allowed to join the association. It is hoped that membership will increase with this new development.
